Hello World!
luckypacket n. \’la-ke ‘pa-ket\ Sealed packet containing
a surprise, usually novelties and confections.
It’s customary in the webosphere to begin a new blog with a greeting to anyone out there who may be listening.
So, hello future readers of eLuckypacket!
The idea for this site has been forming in my mind for almost a year now. Growing from a small kernel of an idea — that Southern-African women spread out all across the globe might like a virtual place to meet and share the wonders of their worlds and the delicious resources of the Internet.
And eLuckpacket is just that — a electronic luckypacket. Something sweet and unexpected for you to savour each morning when you turn on your computer:
… a beautiful photograph of the Kwazulu-Natal coastline
… a funny story of a reader’s first Halloween in a new land
… a surprise interview with a South-African celebrity
We also hope to bring you what I call the sweets of the Internet. Tips, resources and online services you can’t live without … or at least that make life easier!
… how to shrink and email photos to family
… online gift guides for Valentine’s or Mother’s Day
… a design site for those of you living in small, urban spaces
Above all, the focus is on you, dear readers. On what’s going on in your lives.
We believe the challenges of living in a new country, often far away from family and friends, are made lighter when they are shared. When you feel connected. And so we hope that eLuckypacket will be a place for you to meet and share your stories and laugh and cry and realize that you are not alone.
Just how this community and blog will evolve? I’m not quite sure.
What I do know is that there will be many surprises. Our very own luckypacket to share. One I can’t wait to open!
Welcome and thank you for reading!

Congratulations on your new site, it is beautiful! I am very impressed. I’m not quite in your demographic, not having even been to South Africa … so thank you for defining what a Lucky Packet is!
Keep up the good work!!!

Before the South African currency changed to the decimal standard the Tickey was the nickname for the thrippenny coin. A pretty little silver coin traditionally used in Christmas puddings. The 1931 Tickey is the rare one with only one found in circulation.
