Taking Great Group Photos – Every Time!

My brothers and sisters in law will probably not love me for using them as blog fodder but, hey, what’s family for?!

If you have a digital camera, you’ve probably been asked to take a group photo. The office holiday party? The family reunion? Your daughter’s hip-hop dance troupe?

I typically snap off as many shots as the group will let me, then cross my fingers and toes and hope at least one turns out with everyone smiling and all eyes open. Pretty please?

At a family BBQ during our recent holiday, Dave’s dad asked me to snap a group shot of the five kids. After much muttering (my husband being the chief mutterer), the five siblings were badgered into a sort-of, more-or-less, kind-of group in front of some arbitrary greenery. I shot eight or so pictures until they started protesting. And I got lucky. Some were not so great (see below) but at least one was a decent shot of all five kids.

Not so good …

Not so good

Passes for OK – phew!

Lots of fun but not quite what we were looking for …

Lots of fun but not quite what we were looking for ...

I wish I’d read the following advice from Photojojo before taking these …

How to Take Great Group Photos:

  1. Set the timer on your camera. Make it short … 10 seconds max!
  2. Arrange everybody in your viewfinder, making the sure the camera’s zoomed out enough so you won’t cut off anyone’s head.
  3. Now … have everybody that’s going to be in the photo come stand with you behind the camera. Yes, behind the camera.
  4. Ready? Press the button and yell, “Run!” Everybody has to run to get into the photo before the timer goes off. Hurry! Eek!

Wasn’t that fun?

And the result? A photo of smiling, shiny-faced people who look like they’re actually enjoying themselves!
